Easter Outreach 2011

authored by Abby

Acts 29’s Easter week was packed full of fun!  In four locations throughout Hamtramck, our staff joined with high school youth to lead Easter Kids Clubs.  Three women who worship and serve at Acts 29 opened their homes and yards to host clubs for kids in their neighborhood.  About  40 kids heard the Gospel through these kids clubs.  On Saturday, we invited families to our building for an afternoon of games, snacks and an Easter Story Drama.  Twice during the event, Mary Magdalene walked children and their parents through her experience, while three scenes were acted out: the crucifixion, the resurrection and Jesus on the shore with his disciples.  The majority of the attendees were Muslims from Bangladesh and Yemen.  After seeing Jesus nailed to the cross, one Yemeni woman remarked, “Did that really happen?”  A Christian woman standing nearby was able to tell her that yes, it is true!  As you can see, there are families in this city who don’t know the Gospel, and as we share it, we pray diligently that those who hear will believe.

Our Hands to Help

Bed Distribution

This past winter it came to the attention of the staff at Acts 29 that many of the ESL students who have been coming to learn English at our building for several years had a need. Most of the men who attend class at Acts 29 are in an unemployment program and have little money to support their families; as a consequence, many of their family members, men, women and children, had no beds to sleep on. A local company that supports Acts 29 and an Alliance church in Ohio heard about our need. Together they provided over 60 beds for needy families and a testimony to them that Jesus cares about the downcast. Acts 29 hopes to do several more bed distributions in the future, but needs the help of generous donors to get this accomplished.

WARM Training

WARM Training is a government program that educates people about how to keep the cost of heating down in the winter time. If a person has a shut off notice or has a heating bill that is too high for them to pay, they can attend a WARM Training class and get help with their bill. Acts 29 has allowed WARM Training to use its facility to bring in members of the community to be educated and helped because we believe in meeting the needs of people.

Lead Testing

Lead poisoning is a serious issue in Hamtramck, especially for families with young children. Acts 29 hosts a lead testing day, where your children can be tested for lead poisoning for free. We also provide some yummy treats and Elmo comes to cheer up kids after they have been tested.
