FEATURED: Signs of Transformation

Men’s ESL Volunteers

authored by Jonathan

Acts 29 Fellowship is currently looking for volunteers for its Men’s ESL program. Volunteer positions are open for multiple commitment levels. We would appreciate any commitment from occasional help to teaching commitments of more than six hours a week. We are looking for men who are passionate lovers of Jesus Christ, affirm our Statement of Faith and are available for at least part of our current class time schedule. Our current ESL class schedule is 9:30-11:30 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, but opportunities in the afternoon and evening will be opening as well. English, ESL/TESL, or Education degrees and training would be helpful, but are not necessary.

We are looking for teachers who can make a consistent commitment to teach or assist an entire class and maintain a strong Christian witness. In addition to classroom opportunities, we would be blessed by teachers and assistants who are available to visit with students in their homes and engage in cross-cultural relationships. If you are a proficient English speaker and reader, have a living relationship with Jesus Christ that you are willing to share, and a warm heart you are perfectly qualified to teach English with us. On-the-job training in teaching English and cross-cultural ministry will be a part of the process. Please pray about this opportunity and tell your friends, churches and church members.

Mrs. Housey’s Social Studies Quizzing

authored by Abby

“Back to school” for Acts 29 means back to Mrs. Housey’s 6th grade class to help her students with social studies through academic quizzing. The year starts out with the class dividing into groups in which the students meet their coaches and come up with a team name and flag design. Then once a week, the team of coaches visits Mrs. Housey’s class to teach the Social Studies material to their group. At the end of the class period, the students compete in a quiz competition based on their study material. The students also learn a new character principle each week, usually from Proverbs. The Lord has blessed us with this opportunity to share Christ’s love with the city in helping Holbrook Elementary School. Because the Lord has provided hands to help, resources, an open door, and prayer support, Mrs. Housey has seen her students’ grades improve.
This year, we have been blessed with help from a Pastor from Ward Presbyterian, a Wayne State Student Intern and women who attend Acts 29 Fellowship. These coaches are investing in their students weekly and loving them. One of the teams has won three times and has celebrated their accomplishment at a ‘Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Party’ held at Acts 29. Please pray that this ministry would bring glory to God. Pray also that the students, being mostly Yemeni, would hear the Gospel through history, social studies and fellowship time with their coaches.

Be Light Missions and Prayer Conference

authored by Jonathan

On November 9th and 10th Acts 29 Fellowship partnered with Grove City Alliance to host our first missions and prayer conference. The Be Light conference was a dynamic event saturated in prayer and filled with mutual encouragement, discovery and evangelistic opportunity and inspiration. The two nights of fellowship included guest speakers Pastors John Mark and Janine Nguma and Jacob Moulē from Gabon, Africa who shared a stirring encouragement to live a life of daily demonstration to the world of the truth of Jesus Christ. Our guest speakers also provided an authentic African dinner for our fellowship as we sang praises to God for his provision of friends, food and a worldwide missions family.

The following night Evangelists Alberto & Patricia Salazar from Peru provided Peruvian cuisine and gave a passionate testimony and call to salvation and discipleship to our fellowship. Pastor Alberto focused on our young people specifically as the Lord gave him a heart to see them changed and to see Hamtramck become a “factory” for men and women of God. The conference was encouraging, even as it fueled our passion and burden for our city. Unity with our partners in missions around the world gives us a fresh heart and a fresh look at the work of God within us and within our city.

Easter Outreach 2011

authored by Abby

Acts 29’s Easter week was packed full of fun!  In four locations throughout Hamtramck, our staff joined with high school youth to lead Easter Kids Clubs.  Three women who worship and serve at Acts 29 opened their homes and yards to host clubs for kids in their neighborhood.  About  40 kids heard the Gospel through these kids clubs.  On Saturday, we invited families to our building for an afternoon of games, snacks and an Easter Story Drama.  Twice during the event, Mary Magdalene walked children and their parents through her experience, while three scenes were acted out: the crucifixion, the resurrection and Jesus on the shore with his disciples.  The majority of the attendees were Muslims from Bangladesh and Yemen.  After seeing Jesus nailed to the cross, one Yemeni woman remarked, “Did that really happen?”  A Christian woman standing nearby was able to tell her that yes, it is true!  As you can see, there are families in this city who don’t know the Gospel, and as we share it, we pray diligently that those who hear will believe.
